If you weren’t able to secure tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there’s still a way to be part of the excitement right here in Suffolk County.
Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University will host one of two free, large-scale World Cup viewing events as part of a statewide initiative designed to bring the global tournament experience closer to home. The effort, led by Empire State Development and New York State, aims to maximize both the economic and community impact of the World Cup across the region.
The Long Island event is scheduled for Friday, June 12, when fans can gather to watch the Group D matchup between the United States and Paraguay, as well as a Group B match featuring Canada in Toronto. A second viewing event will take place on July 19 at Kensico Dam Plaza in Westchester County.
The family-friendly event is expected to draw thousands, offering residents a chance to celebrate one of the world’s biggest sporting events together. In addition to the live match broadcasts, organizers say the experience will include community-driven programming that reflects the culture and passion of the region, while also supporting local businesses and encouraging community engagement.
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized that the initiative is about more than just watching soccer. It’s part of a broader plan to ensure all New Yorkers can take part in the World Cup, even if they aren’t attending matches in person, while also investing in long-term community benefits.
Andrea Goldsmith, president of Stony Brook University, echoed that sentiment, noting the campus is proud to serve as a gathering place for Long Island families during this global event.
The viewing events also align with the state’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” initiative, encouraging residents to enjoy outdoor spaces and shared experiences. Additional details, including programming and activities, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, but one thing is certain—World Cup fever is coming to Long Island.
