The New York Islanders have a new star on the rise, and his name is Matthew Schaefer. The 18-year-old defenseman made history this week, earning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s Rookie of the Year. Even more impressive, Schaefer became the first unanimous winner of the award in 33 years.
From the very beginning, Schaefer’s NHL career has been nothing short of remarkable. He burst onto the scene by becoming the youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a point in his debut, doing so in style with a power-play goal that also stood as the game-winner. That was just the start of a historic season.
As the year progressed, Schaefer continued to rewrite the record books. He became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a multi-goal game, score an overtime goal, and reach the 25-point mark. His poise and production quickly made him one of the most exciting young players in the league.
Schaefer was surprised with the Calder Trophy during an appearance on Good Morning America, surrounded by family, including his father Todd and brother Johnny, along with former Islanders player Matt Martin and his family. The emotional moment highlighted just how meaningful the achievement was for the young star.
In a heartfelt tribute, Schaefer dedicated the award to his late mother, Jennifer, who passed away from breast cancer in 2024. In her honor, he has partnered with the Islanders Children’s Foundation and Northwell Health to help create a child support center for families battling cancer—showing that his impact reaches far beyond the ice.
“This definitely means a lot,” Schaefer said. “This year was super important to me.”
Statistically, his season was just as impressive as the story behind it. Schaefer finished with 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points, breaking a record previously held by Hall of Famer Phil Housley for most points by an 18-year-old defenseman. He also tied Hall of Famer Brian Leetch for goals scored by a rookie defenseman.
With a historic rookie season now complete, Islanders fans have plenty to be excited about as Schaefer’s journey is just getting started.
