High school students across Suffolk County stepped into prom season with confidence and style, thanks to the Suffolk County Police Department’s 9th Annual Prom Impact event held at the Police Academy in Brentwood.
The event provided hundreds of free dresses, suits, tuxedos, shoes, and accessories to students preparing for their big night. All items were donated by police department members, local businesses, and the community, ensuring that cost would not stand in the way of attending prom.
Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina highlighted the mission behind the initiative, saying, “9th Annual Operation Prom Impact, where we're giving away dresses and suits so people can attend their prom, and it's all free, and it's all donated by members of the community and members of the Suffolk County Police Department.”
Students browsed racks of formal wear and selected complete outfits, with many expressing excitement about the experience. One participant shared, “I tried on six dresses and as soon as I really fought and walked in, the dresses was so pretty. Love the jewelry, love the dresses.”
After choosing their attire, students were invited to walk a runway, cheered on by Catalina and Deputy Police Commissioner Belinda Groneman, turning the day into a celebration of confidence and community support.
Catalina emphasized the broader importance of the event, stating, “It's really great for the community because it really shows the Suffolk County Police Department cares, first of all, and second, it allows everybody in the community to attend their prom and not worry about the finances involved.”
Now in its ninth year, Prom Impact continues to strengthen ties between law enforcement and residents while ensuring every student has the chance to celebrate a milestone moment without financial stress.
