Jets Have to Get it Right

The New York Jets have a long and storied history when it comes to the NFL Draft, though many fans would admit much of that history includes missed opportunities and disappointing selections. This year, however, the Jets have a chance to reshape the franchise and build a foundation for the next decade in New York.

The Jets currently hold the No. 2 and No. 16 overall picks in the 2026 draft. That kind of draft capital can change a franchise quickly, especially for a team looking to return to contention. With two valuable first-round picks, New York enters the draft with an opportunity to make major upgrades on both sides of the ball.

The No. 1 overall pick is widely expected to be Fernando Mendoza heading to the Las Vegas Raiders. If that happens, the Jets would be on the clock at No. 2 with several intriguing options available.

Most insiders believe New York will focus on defense with that selection. Two names often linked to the team are David Bailey and Arvell Reese. The Jets finished last in the league in sacks last season, making pass rush an obvious priority. Bailey led college football with 14.5 sacks last year, while Reese is viewed by many scouts as the more explosive athlete with tremendous upside. The decision between production and potential could shape the future of the defense.

The No. 16 pick is more difficult to project, but many analysts believe the Jets may target a wide receiver to complement Garrett Wilson and deep threat Adonai Mitchell. A slot receiver could be an ideal fit.

Top names like Jordan Tyson and Carnell Tate may already be off the board. Makai Lemon would be an exciting option if he slips, though that appears unlikely. More realistic possibilities include Omar Cooper and Denzel Boston, with Cooper viewed by many as a natural slot fit.

Later in the draft, keep an eye on Ty Simpson as a possible developmental quarterback. If the Jets draft wisely, 2026 could become a turning point for the franchise.
