For many longtime fantasy baseball players, there was once a time when a single player could dominate the stolen base category. Legends like Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman made it possible to build an entire strategy around speed alone. While that era appeared to fade, a new name may be emerging as a modern-day equivalent: Chandler Simpson.

Simpson may not fit the mold of a traditional fantasy star, particularly in power-driven formats. He offers little in terms of home runs, which can limit his appeal in certain leagues. However, in rotisserie formats where categories carry equal weight, his value becomes much clearer. Simpson’s elite speed has the potential to single-handedly swing the stolen base category in a manager’s favor.

In 2024, Simpson became the first minor or major league player since 2012 to record 100 stolen bases in a single season, a remarkable achievement that underscores his rare ability on the basepaths. That speed translated to the major league level as well, as he swiped 44 bases in just over 400 at-bats last season. With a full schedule and continued adjustments against major league pitching, Simpson could take another significant step forward. While 100 steals may be a stretch, totals in the range of 60, 70, or even 80 are within reach.

In today’s game, stolen bases have become increasingly valuable. Across Major League Baseball, there were 2,210 more home runs than stolen bases last season, highlighting the scarcity of elite base stealers. In many fantasy leagues, it takes roughly 150 stolen bases to win the category, meaning one player like Simpson can account for a substantial portion of that total.

Despite being known for his speed, Simpson also brings value in other areas. He hit .295 last season and consistently posted strong batting averages throughout his minor league career. In addition, he scored 53 runs and is expected to move toward the top of the lineup, with the potential to eventually secure a leadoff role.

For fantasy managers, Simpson represents a unique opportunity. While others focus heavily on power, he offers a chance to dominate a scarce category at a relatively low cost. In roto formats, that kind of advantage can be a difference-maker.
