Bowlers from Section XI delivered another strong showing this weekend at the New York State Division I boys bowling individual championship held at Strike 'N Spare Lanes. Several competitors from Suffolk County finished near the top of the standings, continuing a successful run for Long Island bowlers at the state level.
Leading the way was Johnathan Vuono, who placed second overall in the tournament. Vuono posted an impressive total of 1,366 pins across the competition and recorded the highest single game by any Long Island competitor during the event. In Game 3, Vuono rolled a remarkable 278, a performance that vaulted him up the leaderboard and kept him firmly in contention for the state title throughout the day. His consistency and ability to produce high scores under pressure highlighted one of the top performances of the tournament.
Also finishing among the top competitors was Alex Silbert of Eastport-South Manor High School, who secured a fifth-place finish in the state championship. The senior delivered one of the most exciting stretches of bowling late in the event, mounting a strong comeback that propelled him up the standings. Silbert’s best game came in Game 3, when he rolled a 267 to spark his surge toward the top five.
Another strong performance came from Andrew Schaefer of Commack High School. Schaefer finished just outside the top ten, placing 13th overall with a total series of 1,295 pins. His consistent scoring kept him competitive throughout the tournament and added to Section XI’s overall success.
With multiple athletes finishing near the top of the standings, Section XI once again demonstrated the depth of talent in Suffolk County bowling. The performances by Vuono, Silbert, and Schaefer helped showcase the strength of the region’s programs and continued a trend of Long Island bowlers competing at a high level on the state stage in New York.
