Families from across Suffolk County are invited to step back in time and celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary at the America 250th Celebration on Saturday, June 13th, at Veterans Memorial Park in Selden.
Hosted by Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa in partnership with the Middle Country Chamber of Commerce, Suffolk County, and the Town of Brookhaven, the free, family-friendly event promises a day filled with history, entertainment, and patriotic pride.
The park will open at 1 p.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 2 p.m. on the Main Stage. Visitors will be greeted by portrayals of iconic historical figures including George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and William Floyd. The ceremony will also feature a rifle salute honoring the nation’s founding.
Throughout the afternoon, guests can enjoy living history demonstrations, Revolutionary War and Civil War reenactors, historical exhibits, military vehicles, and interactive displays that showcase how Americans lived, worked, cooked, and served throughout the country’s history.
The celebration will also offer attractions for all ages, including a car show, Touch-a-Truck exhibits, food trucks, vendors, live music, and a pizza-eating contest.
As the day progresses, numerous Color Guards and public officials will join together for a patriotic Grand Finale Parade. Evening festivities will continue with country line dancing and a performance by the popular band Southbound.
“This event is made possible through the generous effort and support of dedicated sponsors, volunteers, and community partners,” Caracappa said. “They are as committed to celebrating our nation’s history and the spirit of our community as I am.”
To help ease transportation, free shuttle bus service will run throughout the day between Centereach Pool Park and Veterans Memorial Park.
Organizers say the event offers a unique opportunity for families to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial while experiencing history brought to life in the heart of Suffolk County.
