A Huntington Station man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian, Suffolk County police said.

Manuel Flores, 28, of 36 Leyden St., was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash following the incident that claimed the life of Bacilio Mardoqueo Vasquez, 44, also of Huntington Station. Flores is being held at the Second Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.

According to police, the crash occurred on New York Avenue near West 19th Street.

Investigators said Vasquez was walking across New York Avenue from west to east, just south of West 19th Street, when he was struck by a gray Toyota SUV traveling northbound.

After striking the pedestrian, the driver did not stop and continued northbound on New York Avenue, police said.

Vasquez was transported by ambulance to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Suffolk County Police Department Major Case Unit detectives responded and began an investigation into the fatal crash. Authorities initially said the vehicle involved was believed to be a gray Toyota SUV that likely sustained front-end damage on the driver’s side.

Following the investigation, detectives identified Flores as the alleged driver and placed him under arrest. Police did not release additional details about how investigators located the suspect or the vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Police previously asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-6555. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Suffolk County Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-220-TIPS.

Authorities said additional information may be released as the investigation continues.
