Dredging work at West Meadow Beach is expected to wrap up around the middle of March, according to the latest update from the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, assuming there are no further weather or equipment delays.
The project was undertaken to maintain safe navigable depths for vessels traveling through the waterway while also addressing long-term erosion along the shoreline. Sand dredged from the channel has been used to replenish sections of West Meadow Beach that have gradually lost material over time due to natural coastal processes.
County officials say the dual-purpose effort helps protect the shoreline while ensuring that boaters can continue to safely access the area.
Some residents have raised questions about the sand that was placed along the northern edge of the shoreline near the Old Field Club. Officials explained that sand along this stretch of coast naturally migrates from north to south. Because of this natural movement, the dredging contractor pumped additional sand toward the northern end of the beach.
The Old Field Club then redistributed that material across its beachfront at its own expense. Over time, the sand is expected to gradually move southward along the shoreline and onto West Meadow Beach, helping strengthen the beach and providing additional protection against erosion without additional cost to taxpayers.
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico praised the county’s work on the project and its collaboration with the town.
“Kudos to County Executive Romaine, Commissioner Charlie Bartha and his team over at the Suffolk County Department of Public Works,” Panico said. “Since taking over, they have worked exceedingly well with our town on dredging issues and have their hands full dealing with aging and, in certain places, failing infrastructure.”
Panico added that infrastructure challenges across the region require serious attention.
“The emphasis on our crumbling infrastructure cannot be ignored and is all the more reason why there needs to be an honest conversation and recognition on the costs to fix our infrastructure at every level of government,” he said.
Panico also acknowledged the scope of the department’s responsibilities.
“I know that Suffolk DPW covers a tremendous area, dealing with a myriad of issues, and I want to recognize their work for the residents of Brookhaven and all those who live in and travel across Suffolk County.”
