The William Floyd boys’ varsity wrestling team has secured the League I tournament title, marking its first such win since the 2001-02 season. This accomplishment comes less than a month after the team won the League I dual meet championship for the first time in over four decades.
At Patchogue-Medford High School, William Floyd’s team, coached by Tony Mecca, finished with 263 points to lead their league rivals. Nine wrestlers reached the finals in their respective weight classes, with six emerging as overall champions: Avery Bent (175 lbs), Kayvon Garner (165 lbs), David Gonzalez (190 lbs), Jayvyn Johnson (144 lbs), Josiah Lors (215 lbs), and Jack Meyer (138 lbs). Johnson and Lors both claimed championships for a second consecutive season.
Additional top performers included Maiquel De La Cruz (150 lbs), Angelo Franzese (285 lbs), and Caleb Holmes (132 lbs) finishing second; Jayden Glover (126 lbs), Jordan Glover (110 lbs), and Ryan Murtha (150 lbs) placing third; and Sam Salcedo taking fourth place at 215 pounds. In total, thirteen student-athletes qualified to compete at the Sectional Championships at Stony Brook University this weekend.
Following these achievements, all coaches from both varsity and junior varsity squads were named League I Coaches of the Year. The varsity staff consists of head coach Tony Mecca along with assistant coaches Mike Murtha, Ray Passaro, and Cosmo Stoia. The junior varsity staff includes head coach Brandon Croteau and assistant coach Scott Sottung.
“Congratulations to all of the Colonials student-athletes and coaches on what continues to be a historic season and best of luck in the Sectional Championships!”
