Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro is inviting high school seniors who reside in the Town of Brookhaven to apply for one of two $750 scholarships offered through the Suffolk County Highway Superintendents Association.

The scholarships are designed to support students who plan to pursue a career in engineering, a field that continues to play a critical role in shaping the nation’s infrastructure, economy and future workforce.

As communities grow and technology advances, engineers are increasingly in demand.

From designing safer roads and bridges to developing sustainable energy systems and cutting-edge technology, engineers solve real-world problems that affect everyday life. According to labor projections, many engineering disciplines are expected to see steady job growth in the coming years, driven by infrastructure investment, environmental challenges and rapid innovation.

For students considering their college major, engineering offers a strong foundation in math, science and critical thinking.

It is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and rewarding professional paths, opening doors to careers in civil, mechanical, electrical and environmental engineering, among others.

Engineering graduates often benefit from competitive salaries and opportunities to work on projects that directly impact their communities.

Applicants for the Brookhaven scholarships must submit a cover letter, high school transcript and an essay of no more than 400 words explaining why they plan to pursue a career in engineering.

In their essays, students may wish to highlight personal experiences that sparked their interest in the field, discuss a specific engineering discipline they hope to enter, or describe how they hope to use their skills to improve infrastructure, sustainability or public safety.

Applications must be submitted to Kristen D’Andrea at kdandrea@brookhavenny.gov by Friday, March 20th, 2026.
