A suspected drug dealer and illegal immigrant who prosecutors say left a trail of sickened schoolkids in his wake is back on Long Island after allegedly trying to make a run for the border.
Wilmer Castillo Garcia, 22, a Guatemalan national, was hauled back to Suffolk County after being nabbed by Canadian border officials while allegedly attempting to flee the United States following his release without bail, authorities said.
Prosecutors claim Garcia isn’t just accused of selling drugs to an undercover cop, they say he’s also tied to a shocking incident that sent more than a dozen William Floyd Middle School students to the hospital.
The case first exploded when 12 students were rushed to Peconic Bay Hospital after allegedly eating THC-laced gummies. Investigators traced the source of the edibles to an Instagram account, “7k_teddy,” which they say led straight to Garcia.
Despite the serious allegations, Garcia was released on his own recognizance in August 2025 because the charges against him are not eligible for bail under New York law.
“This defendant allegedly sold drugs to an undercover officer and is also allegedly connected to the hospitalization of multiple school children. Yet, our prosecutors had no legal mechanism to ask for the court to set bail,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said, blasting the state’s bail laws.
Authorities say Garcia later tried to bolt across the border into Canada but was stopped at the Lewiston Bridge by the Canada Border Services Agency. He was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and held at a federal detention facility before being returned to Suffolk County.
Garcia now sits in the Suffolk County Correctional Facility and is due back in court May 19. If convicted, he faces up to nine years behind bars.
The charges are accusations, and Garcia is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
