Wildcats Defense Has Them Unbeaten

There are just five undefeated teams remaining in Suffolk County girls basketball this season and standing at the top of the mountain are the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats. The Wildcats are a perfect 7-0 on the young season and have been as impressive as any team in the county so far. Shoreham-Wading River has relied heavily on its stingy defense, which has consistently shut down opposing offenses and set the tone every night.

The Wildcats have held five of their seven opponents to 30 points or fewer this season, showcasing disciplined team defense, strong rebounding, and relentless on-ball pressure. While defense has been their calling card, the offense has proven it can explode when needed. Shoreham-Wading River has already posted scoring outputs of 77 and 79 points in two separate games, demonstrating a balanced and efficient attack.

As the old saying goes, defense travels, and that has been especially true for the Wildcats. They are a perfect 3-0 on the road, and no opponent has reached the 30-point mark against them away from home. That consistency has made them a difficult matchup regardless of venue.

In their most recent game, Shealyn Varbero led the way with 20 points, while three different Wildcats reached double figures in scoring. That performance highlighted one of the team’s biggest strengths: depth. Through just seven games, four different players have led the team in scoring, a clear indication that this is not a one-player lineup.

This balanced approach makes Shoreham-Wading River difficult to game plan against and allows them to adjust to any opponent. If the Wildcats continue to defend with the same intensity and share the offensive load, they appear poised for what could become a truly special season as league play continues.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
