Seven faculty and staff members from various Stony Brook University colleges and schools have been honored with the Excellence in Educational Effectiveness Award. This accolade, established in 2022, acknowledges individuals committed to best practices in academic assessment, utilizing these results to enhance program excellence. The awards are a collaborative effort between the Office of Educational Effectiveness and the Office of the Provost.

“This year’s winners impressed us with their innovative uses of data to inform decision making and enhance student success across a wide variety of programs and disciplines,” said Carl W. Lejeuz, executive vice president and provost. “These efforts are too often hidden but they are a critical part of why Stony Brook has earned its reputation and standing as the top public university and a state flagship. I am grateful to the Office of Educational Effectiveness for making these efforts more visible and bringing our campus community together to celebrate these successes.”

The award recipients include Stefanie Ambrosio-Mullady from the School of Communication and Journalism, recognized for streamlining assessment processes; Ahmad Esmaili from the Department of Computer Science, noted for his student-centered approach; Jeanette Lukas from the School of Social Welfare, acknowledged for simulation-based learning; Catherine Messina from Public Health, commended for curriculum improvements; Susan Miale from Physical Therapy, praised for innovation in curriculum development; Tracy Trimboli from Nursing, celebrated for her active learning strategies; and Tiffanie Vlack from Professional Development, honored for enhancing academic planning.

“Assessment helps us to define what matters most in our programs and to support student learning and success because it identifies what outcomes we want to see and how we will measure and determine how effective we are in creating those objectives,” stated Catherine Scott, director of educational effectiveness. She emphasized that these awards highlight significant efforts dedicated to ensuring program quality at Stony Brook University.
