William Floyd High School senior Jawuan Smith reached a significant milestone in his basketball career by scoring 1,000 points. This achievement was celebrated before the game against Riverhead on January 8. Smith had achieved this milestone earlier, on January 4, during a match against Half Hollow Hills East, where he contributed nine points and 12 rebounds. He is the first player from William Floyd to reach this milestone since Devonte Dixon did so in the 2014-15 season.
Following the ceremony honoring his achievement, Smith played a pivotal role in securing a victory for the Colonials with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, leading to a decisive 71-39 win. The team now holds an impressive record of 10-3 overall and remains undefeated in League I play with six victories.
"Scoring 1,000 points in your career means you were able to take care of your body and stay injury free – play through pain, discomfort, and fight through adversity," stated Will Slinkosky, head coach of the boys' varsity basketball team. Coach Slinkosky further emphasized that reaching such milestones requires dedication beyond regular practice sessions. "These are the exact reasons why Jawuan Smith was able to accomplish this honor. Our coaching staff, teammates and especially Coach D are extremely proud," he added.
Smith's consistent performance has seen him average a double-double each game for two consecutive seasons. He was recognized as one of Newsday's top 100 boys’ basketball players on Long Island for two years running and has received several accolades including All-League, All-Conference, All-County honors, and selection to Newsday’s 2024 All-Long Island First Team.
Jawuan Smith celebrated his accomplishment alongside family and coaches.
