Girls and Boys Basketball Roundup

This past week, New York State Public High Schools began their Winter Sports programs across the state. Here are the following results from the first games of the year for the handful of Girls and Boys Basketball teams that had scheduled games.

Girls:

Westhampton Beach 54, Longwood 52:

Westhampton Beach’s Jane Atkinson seems to have a flair for the dramatic as she hit the game winning shot with 6.1 seconds left to lead the Westhampton Beach Hurricanes to a 54-52 win over Longwood in their season opener this past Friday.

Kate Sweet was the leading scorer for the Hurricanes as she scored 21 points and had six steals. Sandra Clarke chipped in with a 16 point, 7 assist game and Chloe Blowes made an impact as she grabbed 15 rebounds.

Despite a heartbreaking loss, Giselle Harris had a remarkable performance in the season opener as she scored 17 points for Longwood.

Deer Park 39, Miller Place 26:

Savannah Singleton scored 14 points and Jamirah Jones added 10 points to lead Deer Park in their first game of the year over Miller Place.

Ava Zicharelli and Julie Orenzo lead their team in scoring as they both scored eight points for Miller Place in their season opener.

Boys:

Sachem East 74, Islip 69:

Gino Capuano had 21 points, six rebounds and four assists in a double overtime thriller over Islip this past week. Capuano also made two clutch free throws late in the second overtime to take the lead over Islip, guiding the Flaming Arrows to victory.

Carmine Jaconi made big time contributions all game as he scored 15 points and hit a game tying buzzer-beating floater at the end of the first overtime that kept the game going.

Devon Carter had 29 points and 10 rebounds for Islip in a losing effort.
