The trade deadline is just a little more than a week away and there has been months of speculation about what the Yankees have to do.
The Bombers have some pretty obvious holes. Third base has been a major need all season long. Oswaldo Cabrera isn't the answer and despite his contract DJ the Machine, hasn't looked anything like his old self with just three extra base hits all season. The bullpen is an issue as well and needs more than just one piece, but a lefty reliever is a must have. The fan base would also like a starter and impact bat, but as the want list gets longer, the competition to fill those needs gets greater.
Here are the most likely Yankee trade targets to watch in the next week plus:
Tanner Scott, Miami Marlins - This one is a no brainer. The Marlins are selling and Scott has had a terrific season. He has a 1.30 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP to go with his 15 saves. The key is that he is a lefty and that fills a back end of the bullpen need, and lefty arm all in one.
Kyle Finnegan, Washington Nationals - Finnegan has similar excellent numbers. He has a 2.43 ERA and is in the top 5 in baseball for saves. Finnegan is older but has electric stuff. The question is after trading Hunter Harvey do the Nats move him?
Mason Miller, Oakland A's - Everyone wants Miller and the A's know it. He will cost a king's ransom and we know that Cashman doesn't often pay that. But, with Miller he might be worth it. He is a young, controllable asset that might have the best back end stuff in the sport.
Garrett Crochet, Chicago White Sox - Crochet is a young lefty that was moved to the rotation this season. That is both good and bad because there aren't many innings on his young arm, but it also means he might be hit with an innings limit. Like Miller he will cost a fortune but we know the Sox are going to move him so he can be had.
Jesus Luzardo, Miami Marlins - This is another name that continues to pop up for New York because Miami has not been secretive about their wish to tell off parts. Luzardo has a ton of upside, but he also has injury concerns. He would slot in well as a #3 starter for New York, but they might have to pay an ace-like price.
Luis Rengifo, Los Angeles Angels - Rengifo is batting .315 this season, plays multiple positions, including 3B, and is young and under control. The negatives are he has not shown this type of performance long term and he is currently injured. Cashman also probably looks at him as only a slight upgrade and might not be willing to part with a top prospect for him.
The Yankees will certainly make a move before the deadline. It might be smaller than what fans anticipate though because we have seen the Cashman mantra of 'our best move is guys getting healthy'. It's doubtful that New York makes a huge splash for a bat, but if they want to keep Soto and make a run during Judge and Cole's best years, this should be the time to sell off young assets and go for it all.
