Trash to Treasure

First grade students in Carolyn Kelly’s class at Verne W. Critz Elementary School recently celebrated Earth Day with a “trash to treasure” learning experience. After an introductory lesson on Earth Day and the basics of recycling, the students learned that trash can be reused and repurposed into something useful. Applying this knowledge, they created projects where they transformed items that would normally be discarded into functional items. Among the projects were maracas made out of water bottles, bird feeders created from milk cartons and craft organizers made from cereal boxes.
