Members of the Suffolk County Police Department recently laced up their running shoes for a cause that extends far beyond the finish line, taking part in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run at Farmingdale State College.
The event brought together members of the SCPD and law enforcement agencies from across the region to help raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics New York and the incredible athletes who compete throughout the year. More than just a race, the Torch Run celebrates inclusion, determination and the power of sports to bring communities together.
Officers proudly joined fellow first responders in carrying the torch and running in support of Special Olympics athletes, demonstrating the department's continued commitment to giving back to the community. Their participation also highlighted the strong partnership between local law enforcement and Special Olympics New York, a relationship that has helped promote opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities for many years.
Deputy Commissioner Groneman was on hand to offer words of encouragement to participants before and during the event, recognizing both the runners and the athletes whose dedication serves as an inspiration to so many.
The annual Torch Run has become one of the signature fundraising events for Special Olympics New York, with law enforcement officers across the state coming together to help make a difference. Funds raised through the event help provide year-round athletic training and competition opportunities for thousands of Special Olympics athletes.
The Suffolk County Police Department expressed its pride in once again supporting the event.
"We're proud to take part in this annual run to support these amazing athletes," the department said in a statement.
For the officers who participated, the Torch Run was about more than logging miles—it was about standing alongside remarkable athletes and helping ensure they have every opportunity to compete, succeed and inspire others. It was another example of the Suffolk County Police Department's commitment to serving the community both on and off duty.
