Another outstanding spring season has come to a close for William Floyd athletics, and once again the Colonials proved why they are one of Suffolk County's premier athletic programs.
From championship-caliber performances to historic individual accomplishments, William Floyd student-athletes enjoyed another memorable spring that showcased their talent, dedication and school pride. Four varsity teams qualified for the postseason, both the boys' and girls' track and field teams posted impressive 5-1 records in League I competition, and numerous student-athletes earned county, Long Island and state recognition.
The varsity baseball team, led by Head Coach Keith Kobasiuk, earned its third consecutive playoff berth after finishing 12-6 in League I play. Although the Colonials were eliminated in the double-elimination tournament, they capped another successful season with 12 victories and several All-League selections.
The flag football team continued its rise under Head Coach Ron Krawczyk, finishing 9-3 and reaching the Suffolk County semifinals for the second straight postseason. The Colonials earned an impressive playoff victory over Walt Whitman before giving eventual county and state champion Half Hollow Hills all it could handle in a hard-fought semifinal. Vinte'ya Rountree highlighted the season by earning Suffolk County League I Defensive Player of the Year honors along with All-Long Island First Team recognition.
William Floyd's boys' lacrosse team reached the playoffs for the second consecutive year and celebrated its first postseason victory in several seasons with a 13-7 win over South Fork. The girls' lacrosse team extended its remarkable playoff streak to six straight seasons after posting an outstanding 11-3 record in Division I before falling in a one-goal playoff thriller to Connetquot.
One of the biggest individual highlights of the spring came on the tennis courts, where sophomore Vidal Macchia made school history. Macchia became the first boys' tennis player in William Floyd history to earn All-State honors and finished among the top five players in New York after an impressive run at the state championships.
The Colonials also excelled on the track, with both the boys' and girls' teams producing winning seasons while sending numerous athletes to the county championships and state qualifier meet. The softball team, featuring a young roster, continued to make strides while laying the foundation for future success.
With playoff appearances, historic milestones and dozens of postseason honors, William Floyd's spring athletes once again represented their school with excellence. As another successful season comes to a close, the future remains bright for the Colonials, whose tradition of athletic success continues to grow with each passing year.
