Dinking for the Win

Dinking Champions | Town of Brookhaven Parks and Recreation

Competition, camaraderie and plenty of perfectly placed shots were on display as the Town of Brookhaven recently hosted its Pickleball Dinking Tournament, bringing together players for a fun-filled day of friendly competition.

Unlike traditional pickleball matches that often feature powerful drives and fast-paced rallies, the dinking tournament focused on one of the sport's most important skills—control. Participants relied on patience, finesse and precision as they carefully placed soft shots into the kitchen, testing their touch rather than their power.

When the competition came to an end, Mary and Don Scorny captured first-place honors with an outstanding performance throughout the tournament. Vikki Jantzen and Karen Poidomani earned second place, while Carole Walsh and Tara Deegan rounded out the winners with a third-place finish.

The unique tournament challenged players to think strategically on every shot. The only legal shot was a dink, and each ball had to land inside the kitchen to remain in play. A shot landing on the kitchen line was considered in, while any ball traveling beyond the kitchen was ruled out. Players also had to stay alert, as any ball headed out that was touched by a player or paddle remained a live ball.

The format highlighted the finesse and strategy that have helped make pickleball one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Rather than relying on power, competitors succeeded through accuracy, consistency and the ability to outmaneuver their opponents with well-placed shots.

The Town of Brookhaven's Pickleball Dinking Tournament provided players of all skill levels with an enjoyable opportunity to sharpen their game, enjoy some friendly competition and connect with fellow pickleball enthusiasts.

By the end of the day, the smiles on the players' faces said it all, as another successful community event showcased both the fun and fellowship that continue to make pickleball a favorite pastime throughout Brookhaven.

Mine the Mountains

For years, fantasy baseball managers have understood the "Coors Effect." Whenever the Colorado Rockies had a long homestand, it was time to load up your lineup with Rockies hitters and let the thin mountain air do the rest.
