Summer vacation is a time for sunshine, swimming and family fun, but it doesn't have to mean putting books on the shelf.
Reading for just 10 to 15 minutes a day can help children maintain the skills they built during the school year while making reading a fun part of summer instead of another assignment. Whether it's at the beach, before bedtime or during a road trip, every page helps build lifelong readers.
The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library encourages families to make reading part of their summer routine with these five easy tips:
1. Let Kids Pick Their Own Books
Graphic novels, joke books, sports stories, spooky tales, Pokémon guides, it all counts! Kids are more excited to read when they choose what interests them.

2. Read a Little Each Day
Even 10–15 minutes before bed, during car rides, or after camp can help keep reading part of the routine.
3. Try Audiobooks and eBooks
Audiobooks are perfect for road trips and quiet time, and your library card gives you access to digital books and more through Libby!

4. Visit the Library
A trip to the library can spark excitement for reading, new series, fun programs, and discovering favorite authors.
5. Keep Reading Fun
Summer reading shouldn’t feel like homework. Reading together, laughing over silly stories, and exploring favorite topics all help build lifelong readers.
