Heroes Breakfast Honors First Responders, Volunteers

Oheka Castle | Legislator Leslie Kennedy

Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy hosted the fifth annual Suffolk County Heroes Breakfast on at Oheka Castle in Huntington, honoring first responders and community members whose service and sacrifice have made a lasting impact.

Originally established to recognize healthcare workers who served on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has since expanded to celebrate police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and others dedicated to protecting their communities.

The ceremony opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Charlie Tritto of VFW Post 1244, followed by an invocation from Rev. Bill Minson, a longtime advocate for improved mental health services for 9/11 first responders. Liam Lyons of the Suffolk County Police Department Pipes & Drums performed "God Bless America."

Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol Toulon Jr., a previous Heroes Breakfast honoree, addressed attendees, emphasizing the importance of recognizing those who serve in law enforcement and public safety.

Four Jacob's Light Humanitarian Awards were presented during the ceremony. Created by Diane Kenney in memory of her son, Army Specialist Jacob Fletcher, who was killed while serving overseas, the award recognizes individuals who demonstrate resilience, compassion, and selfless service.

This year's recipients were Trypheny Collymore Johnson, an advocate for underserved communities; Patricia Mullen, Northeast Region Trustee for Concerns of Police Survivors, who has supported families of fallen officers following the death of her husband from a 9/11-related illness; Detective Didarul Islam, the slain New York City police officer remembered for his dedication to family, faith, and community; and Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinoza, who was killed by a suspected drunk driver earlier this year. Espinoza's husband, Francisco Malaga, and daughter, Mia, accepted the award on her behalf.

"There's nothing more than you can give in the line of service than your life," Kennedy said. "Recognition keeps their spirits alive."
