The baby just couldn't wait.
So thanks to quick thinking and fast acting first responders, a healthy baby girl was born literally on the side of the road in Suffolk County, with zero time to make it to the hospital.
A Suffolk County police officer and two East Moriches Rescue responders helped bring a baby girl safely into the world after answering an early morning emergency call in Eastport.
According to Suffolk County Police, officers responded to a 911 call reporting that a woman was in active labor while seated in the passenger seat of a Nissan Pathfinder parked on the shoulder of southbound County Road 51.
Seventh Precinct Officer Amanda Brisson was the first to arrive at the scene.
Realizing the baby was about to be born, Brisson assisted the expectant mother and helped prepare for the delivery inside the vehicle while awaiting emergency medical personnel.
Shortly afterward, East Moriches Rescue responders arrived and took over medical care. Paramedic Steven Diamantopoulos and Emergency Medical Technician Ben Cohen successfully delivered the infant, a baby girl, inside the SUV.
The new mother, a 22-year-old Riverhead resident, and her newborn daughter were both reported to be in good condition following the delivery.
After the birth, the mother and child were transported by East Moriches Rescue ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for further evaluation and care. The ambulance was driven by Origen Symes.
