History buffs, families and adventure seekers will soon have a chance to explore Long Island’s rich Revolutionary War past through a new interactive challenge spanning 26 historic locations across the island.

The “Long Island History Hunt: Redcoats & Rebels Edition” kicks off May 23 and runs through Sept. 30, encouraging participants to visit museums, landmarks and historic sites while competing for prizes, including a $1,776 grand prize honoring America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Sponsored by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, the free event combines local history with a modern scavenger hunt experience. Participants register online, visit designated sites, snap selfies and upload their photos through the event website.

Among the participating locations are the Manor of St. George in Shirley, William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach, Sherwood-Jayne Farm in Setauket, Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, Raynham Hall Museum, Hallockville Museum Farm, and dozens of other historic properties tied to Long Island’s colonial and Revolutionary War heritage.

Organizers say the event is designed to get residents and visitors traveling across Long Island while discovering places many have never visited before.

“From the secrets of the Culper Spy Ring to the site of Long Island’s largest Revolutionary War battle, history comes alive at every stop,” the event promises.

Players are automatically entered for prizes after visiting just one site, but organizers say the more locations participants complete, the better their chances of winning. Those who successfully visit all 26 sites will qualify for the grand prize drawing and additional awards.

The challenge is also intended to boost awareness and tourism for local museums and historic organizations, many of which rely heavily on seasonal visitors and community support.

Colorful signs and promotional displays for the hunt have already begun appearing at participating locations across Long Island.

More information, registration details and a complete list of participating sites can be found at  LIHistoryHunt.com.
