Do you spend a lot of time on social media. Did you ever think to yourself "yeah, I can be a content creator, I can do that."

If so, the Suffolk County Police Department might have the job for you.

The SCPD is seeking applicants for provisional Public Relations Specialist positions in its Public Information Bureau, offering a chance for communications professionals to work in a fast-paced law enforcement environment.

The department announced the openings this week, describing the role as an opportunity to help “tell the story of the men and women who serve our community every day.”

According to SCPD, the position involves creating social media content across multiple platforms, photographing and filming department events, writing press releases and media advisories, and monitoring digital engagement trends. Public relations specialists will also assist with answering the department’s Crime Stoppers tips hotline.

The positions are based at Suffolk County Police Headquarters in Yaphank. Officials said there are currently two shifts available: Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday through Wednesday from 4 p.m. to midnight.

The starting salary ranges from $58,456 to $64,290 annually. Benefits include medical insurance, dental and optical coverage, enrollment in the New York State Retirement System and access to a deferred compensation plan.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in journalism, advertising or a related field, along with at least two years of professional experience involving writing or editing responsibilities in journalism, marketing, managerial sales or public relations. Officials noted that relevant work experience may substitute for formal education requirements.

The department said photography, videography and video editing experience are considered strong assets for candidates applying for the role.

Because the position is provisional, candidates hired must eventually take the civil service examination for the title and rank among the top eligible candidates to obtain permanent status.

Applications are due by May 26th. Interested applicants may submit resumes by email to SCPD.Personnel@suffolkcountyny.gov or in person at police headquarters in Yaphank.
