It was a memorable week for Rocky Point Athletics, as the district’s wrestling program was well represented during the Section XI awards, highlighted by a series of prestigious honors recognizing athletes, coaches, and staff.
Leading the celebration was Shayla Gulino, the team’s athletic trainer, who was named the recipient of the Section XI Wrestling Donatelli & Smith Medical Professional of the Year Award. Gulino has been a vital part of the program, consistently prioritizing the health and well-being of student-athletes. In a statement, Rocky Point praised her efforts, noting, “Her commitment to the health, safety, and success of our student-athletes is exceptional.”
Several wrestlers were also recognized for their achievements on and off the mat. Tyler Callahan earned the Scholar-Athlete Award in addition to receiving All-County honors, highlighting both his academic and athletic success. Teammate Malachi Reid was also named All-County, further showcasing the strength of Rocky Point’s roster this season.
On the coaching side, Justin Amendola was honored as the League VI Junior Varsity Coach of the Year, a testament to his leadership and ability to develop young talent within the program.
Head coach Darren Goldstein headlined the evening with an impressive list of accolades, capping off a remarkable year. Goldstein was named League VI Varsity Coach of the Year and Suffolk County Varsity Coach of the Year by the Suffolk County Coaches Association. In addition, he received the prestigious Joe Campo Grand Master Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his long-standing impact and dedication to the sport of wrestling.
Rocky Point Athletics shared its pride following the event, stating, “These honors reflect the dedication, character, and excellence that define Rocky Point Wrestling. We are incredibly proud of all of our athletes and coaches who continue to represent our school and community at the highest level.”
With such a strong showing at the Section XI awards, the Rocky Point wrestling program continues to set a high standard for excellence across Suffolk County.
