Seed and Spice Library – Free Seeds, Sample Spices

Free seeds and spices at the library. | MMS Community Library

If you love gardening, the library is here to help you grow your own vegetables and flowers. At each branch, we have a seed library where you can get free seed packets to grow at home. Visit any MMSCL branch in person and choose from a selection of seasonal seed varieties. All have been selected to grow in our area. All you need is a library card. You can take a limited number of packets per visit—just head to the Adult Services Desk to get some seeds. They are yours to keep and grow. Learning how plants grow, starting seeds, and tending a garden are fun activities that the whole family can enjoy.

Our spice library is also available for you to try out new flavors. We will be highlighting a variety of seasonal and international spices throughout the year. If you enjoy cooking and exploring new recipes, check out the spice library at any branch. Past spices we have explored include za’atar, pink pepper, and dill. Sign out a packet of spice (yours to keep), grab a free recipe booklet that includes a history of the spice and its origins, and try out your cooking skills with a new flavor. This month’s featured spice blends are shichimi togarashi, a Japanese seven-spice blend based on peppers, and a Portuguese peri peri blend featuring African bird’s-eye peppers for a real kick.
