William Floyd High School students recently gained a unique, hands-on look at the intersection of art and criminal justice during a special assembly and workshop led by Suffolk County Police Department forensic artist Danielle Gruttadaurio.
Gruttadaurio, who has served with the SCPD for 17 years, spoke to students about her role in helping law enforcement solve crimes by creating composite sketches based on witness and victim descriptions. During the assembly, she walked students through real-life cases she has worked on, including investigations connected to the Gilgo Beach victims, offering a rare and compelling glimpse into how forensic art contributes to active investigations.
Following the presentation, art elective students participated in an interactive workshop where they explored the process in greater depth. Gruttadaurio demonstrated how she interviews victims, emphasizing the importance of patience, communication, and attention to detail when gathering visual information from memory.
Students then stepped into the role of forensic artists themselves. Using Gruttadaurio as a mock victim, they conducted interviews and asked detailed questions to develop descriptions of a suspect they had never seen. From there, they translated those descriptions into sketches, applying both artistic skill and investigative thinking.
The results impressed both instructors and peers. Many students produced detailed illustrations that closely resembled the mystery subject, later revealed to be celebrity Justin Timberlake. The activity not only challenged their technical abilities but also highlighted the importance of observation and critical thinking.
Beyond technique, Gruttadaurio shared her personal journey, encouraging students to pursue their passions. She spoke candidly about early skepticism she faced when entering the field and how perseverance helped her succeed in a highly specialized career.
School officials expressed appreciation to Gruttadaurio and the SCPD for providing students with an engaging and educational experience that showcased a unique career path while reinforcing the value of dedication and creativity.
