History was made this week in the Smithtown Central School District, and it was a moment that went far beyond the scoreboard. Cheers echoed, sneakers squeaked, and smiles filled the gym as the district hosted its very first Unified Basketball game on Tuesday night.

Held at Smithtown High School West, the event brought together more than 30 student-athletes who took the court against Middle Country. Unified sports are designed to unite students of all abilities, creating an inclusive environment where teamwork, sportsmanship, and connection take center stage.

The atmosphere inside the gym reflected just how meaningful the night was. The stands were packed with families, teachers, and classmates, all cheering enthusiastically and showing their support. It was a celebration not just of competition, but of community.

Smithtown Central School District Director of Athletics Jason Lambert shared how important the moment was for the district.

“This is my fourth year here in the district as athletic director, and when I interviewed for the position, I said we need to have unified sports here full-time,” Lambert said. “We were fortunate enough to get Unified Bowling started, and now we have basketball. It’s as positive a sports environment as you’ll ever be a part of.”

Head coach Emily Fey, who also leads the Unified Bowling team, expressed her excitement about finally seeing the program take the court.

“We’ve been waiting such a long time for this,” Fey said. “We’re so happy and thankful to Smithtown. We have 32 players signed up and more are coming. The more, the merrier for me.”

The game itself was filled with energy, encouragement, and moments that brought the crowd to its feet. Teammates supported one another, celebrated each basket, and demonstrated the true spirit of unified athletics.

The district’s social media account also highlighted the significance of the night, sharing, “We will have more on this historic night later this week. Here’s to making history—together.”

For Smithtown, the introduction of Unified Basketball marks an important step forward in expanding opportunities for all students to participate in athletics. It reflects a commitment to inclusion and ensuring that every student has the chance to be part of a team.

As the final buzzer sounded, it was clear that this was just the beginning. The smiles, cheers, and sense of belonging made the night unforgettable.

In Smithtown, history was made—and it was a victory for everyone involved.
