This past week, Patchogue-Medford star goaltender Ramon Mateo reached a remarkable milestone, recording his 500th career varsity save in a thrilling 7-6 victory over Commack.
What makes the achievement even more impressive is that Mateo accomplished it as only a sophomore. Reaching 500 career saves at such a young age speaks volumes about his talent, consistency, and importance to the Raiders program. With plenty of varsity lacrosse still ahead of him, the milestone may be only the beginning of what could become a historic career.
Mateo has already built an outstanding reputation in a short amount of time. Last season, he was named the Division I Rookie of the Year after making an immediate impact as a freshman. Rather than slowing down after a strong debut season, he has continued to elevate his game this spring.
Known for his quick reflexes, strong positioning, and ability to make big saves in key moments, Mateo has become one of the top young goalies on Long Island. His presence in net gives Patchogue-Medford confidence every time the Raiders take the field.
The milestone came in another important win for Pat-Med, as the team edged Commack by a 7-6 score. It marked the Raiders’ second consecutive victory and provided valuable momentum as the regular season enters a critical stretch.
Patchogue-Medford now sits at 5-6 overall and appears to be finding its rhythm at the right time. With Mateo leading the defense and the offense coming through in close games, the Raiders are building confidence heading into the final portion of the schedule.
Next up is a challenging three-game road trip that could have major postseason implications. Pat-Med will first visit Sachem East before traveling to face North Babylon. The stretch concludes with another tough matchup against Longwood.
Those contests will test the Raiders, but having a standout goaltender like Mateo gives the team a chance in every game. His ability to control the crease and make momentum-changing saves can be the difference in tight matchups.
For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Mateo and his impressive milestone. Five hundred career saves as a sophomore is a tremendous accomplishment, and many more may still be on the horizon.
