The Longwood baseball team is putting together a season to remember, and now the Lions have officially secured a spot in the playoffs.
Even more impressive, Longwood has clinched a postseason berth while only about halfway through the regular season schedule. The Lions improved to a perfect 10-0 record this week, continuing what has already become one of the most remarkable starts in program history.
Longwood officially punched its playoff ticket in dominant fashion with a 3-0 victory over Walt Whitman. Starting pitcher Brendan Rivera was sensational on the mound, tossing a complete-game no-hitter over seven innings. Rivera struck out five batters and never allowed Whitman to get into rhythm offensively. It was the latest example of just how strong Longwood’s pitching staff has been all season long.
Through ten games, the Lions have shut out four opponents and held two others to just one run. Incredibly, only one team all season has scored more than three runs against them, and that came during a series against William Floyd. Outside of those three games with Floyd, Longwood has surrendered only five total runs in the other seven contests.
While the pitching has grabbed plenty of attention, the Lions have also delivered at the plate. Longwood’s offense has scored in double figures in five of its ten games, showing the lineup can break games open quickly. They have also posted nine runs in two other contests, proving the team has balance in every phase of the game.
That combination of lights-out pitching, timely hitting, and strong defense has made Longwood one of the toughest teams on Long Island this spring. With confidence growing each week, the Lions appear focused on much more than simply reaching the playoffs.
Longwood will look to keep its undefeated season alive this week with more matchups against Walt Whitman and Sayville before heading into an important three-game series against Patchogue-Medford. Those games should provide another strong test as the Lions continue their chase for league and postseason success.
For now, though, Longwood can celebrate an outstanding accomplishment. A perfect 10-0 start and an early playoff clincher have made this a historic season already, and the Lions may just be getting started.
