Political leaders across Suffolk County reacted Wednesday with a mix of relief, sorrow and reflection after accused Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to eight killings.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine called the plea a pivotal moment for victims’ families and the broader community.

“Today, we witnessed a vicious murderer plead guilty to eight homicides, hopefully giving closure to some of the families who lost their loved ones at the hands of this vile person,” Romaine said.

He also emphasized the collaborative effort behind the case, adding, “Thank you to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, the Suffolk County Police Department, and all of the partner agencies in law enforcement that came together to bring this man to justice.”

Local political leaders echoed that sentiment, pointing to the plea as a long-awaited resolution.

Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia said, “Today, justice has finally been delivered.”

Garcia highlighted the emotional toll the case has taken over the years, noting, “After more than a decade of heartbreak, uncertainty, and unimaginable pain, the families of the Gilgo Beach victims can begin to find closure.”

He also credited District Attorney Tierney’s leadership in solving the case, describing the effort as focused and determined. Garcia said Tierney “brought together his team, the Gilgo Beach Task Force, and a wide network of law enforcement agencies under one clear directive: solve this case for the victims and their families.”

For many residents, the guilty plea represents both an end and a beginning, closing a painful chapter while reinforcing the importance of continued vigilance and justice.

While the legal proceedings move toward sentencing, officials say the focus remains on honoring the victims and supporting their families as the community continues to process the impact of the crimes.
