Ritual Animal Killing Suspected In Bellport Woods

Leads sought in Bellport animal sacrifice. | ASPCA

The sadistic ritual of sacrificing animals has reared its ugly head with the discovery of a mutilated goat in Bellport.

Officials said the body of a white baby goat, believed to be less than a month old and weighing about eight pounds, was found near an underpass along the Long Island Expressway. The animal had been decapitated, and authorities believe the killing may be linked to ritualistic activity.

According to officials, the goat was discovered by a passerby who alerted authorities. Investigators are now working to determine whether the animal was killed at the scene or brought there after the act. The area continues to be canvassed for evidence.

Authorities indicated that such incidents tend to increase during the spring season, though similar discoveries have occurred throughout the year. Officials familiar with these cases reported that ritual sites often include candles arranged in patterns, along with items such as food offerings, money, and colored cloths.

Previous investigations across Suffolk County have uncovered similar scenes, including animal remains placed near cemetery headstones, decapitated chickens left in public areas, and multiple goat heads found along roadways. In one case, officials reported that a cow’s tongue had been nailed to a tree with a threatening message.

Officials stated that while certain forms of animal slaughter may be legally permitted if conducted humanely and for consumption, the circumstances in this case do not meet those standards. The killing has been described by investigators as an intentional and particularly cruel act.

Experts say such rituals are sometimes used by adherents as an offering to Satan.

A reward totaling $4,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information relating to the decapitated goat, and any other information about ritualistic acts of animal cruelty, is asked to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631 382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
