Students at Center Moriches High School came together in a spirited display of teamwork and school pride during the school’s annual Battle of the Classes.

Now in its second year, the event featured all four grade levels competing in a series of activities designed to promote collaboration, creativity and community connection. The competition capped off a weeklong series of events that encouraged participation and built excitement throughout the school.

During the week, students worked together to create and paint murals representing their grades while earning sportsmanship points. A building-wide scavenger hunt added to the anticipation, as students searched for hidden red hockey pucks, known as “advantage coins,” which provided select grades with a competitive edge in the final event.

“I brought this event to Center Moriches High School because it was such a memorable and meaningful experience for me when I was a student,” said physical education teacher Kevin Scott, who organized the event. “Now in just our second year, the event exceeded our expectations and continues to grow.”

The week culminated in an evening competition where each grade wore its own color—freshmen in purple, sophomores in black, juniors in blue and seniors in tie-dye—and performed creative entrances before competing in a variety of games.

Activities included relay races, volleyball, tug-of-war and a scooter relay, with points awarded for performance, sportsmanship and school spirit. The competition remained close throughout the evening, with students cheering loudly for their classmates.

In a narrow finish, the senior class claimed victory, edging out the juniors by just one point.

“Events like this play an important role in building school spirit and strengthening our school community,” said Principal Marissa Mangogna. “It’s truly wonderful to see our students come together.”
