Family Service League (FSL), a longtime Long Island nonprofit providing essential human services, has announced the appointment of Kerri Smith as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.

Smith succeeds Karen Boorshtein, who is retiring after a distinguished tenure leading the organization and expanding its reach across Long Island. In announcing the leadership transition, Boorshtein said Smith’s experience, vision, and leadership style closely align with the organization’s mission and future direction, making her the standout choice following a comprehensive selection process.

Smith brings more than 20 years of experience in human services, combining legal, social work, and executive leadership expertise. She holds a law degree from South Texas College of Law and is admitted to the New York Bar. She also earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of Texas, where she received the Dean’s Award for the Promotion of Social Justice.

Most recently, Smith served as Chief Operating Officer at Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York, overseeing programs and operations across Long Island and New York City. She also held leadership roles at the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the New York City Administration for Children’s Services.

Smith said she is honored to step into the role as FSL celebrates its 100th anniversary, adding that she looks forward to building on its legacy while advancing its mission and expanding services to meet evolving community needs.

Founded in 1926, Family Service League serves approximately 60,000 Long Islanders each year through programs addressing mental health, addiction treatment, housing support, job training, and family services.
