Op Ed: When Terrorists Become “Teens Enjoying the Weather”

CNN Headline | Twitter

If you ever needed proof that the mainstream media have completely lost their minds and permanently destroyed what tiny shreds of credibility they had left with rational Americans, look no further than CNN’s coverage of the attempted terrorist bombing outside Gracie Mansion.

Two men were videotaped throwing improvised explosive devices during a protest. The carnage had those bombs gone off would have been devastating. Kudos to the NYPD for quick arrests. Brave officers risked their lives protecting others during the attempted terrorist attack.

Authorities say the devices contained TATP, the same volatile explosive used in numerous terrorist attacks around the world.

Investigators say the suspects pledged allegiance to ISIS and even referenced wanting something “bigger” and deadlier than the Boston Marathon bombing.

How did CNN choose to open the story?

“Two Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could’ve been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather. But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside of Zohran Mamdani's home. Here's what we know so far."

Enjoying the weather.

That’s the framing for an alleged ISIS-inspired terrorist bombing attempt.

To understand how absurd this is, imagine the same treatment applied to other moments in history.

December 7th, 1941 might read something like this: “Several young Japanese pilots set out over the Pacific on a bright Hawaiian morning that could’ve been a normal day flying above paradise before their journey took a darker turn near Pearl Harbor.”

How about November 22nd, 1963: “A Dallas resident was enjoying a turkey sandwich on the 6th floor of Texas Book Depository, overlooking Dealey Plaza Friday morning, for what could’ve been a normal day enjoying the presidential motorcade during abnormally sunny weather. But in less than an hour, his life would drastically change as the he would be arrested for suspicious activity during his anti-JFK protest at the motorcade route."

Or September 11th, 2001: “Nineteen Middle Eastern travelers boarded flights on a crisp late-summer morning for what could’ve been a routine day of air travel before their plans dramatically altered the skyline of Lower Manhattan, Arlington County, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.”

Take the Lincoln assassination. By CNN’s standard, perhaps the lead would read: “A well-known stage actor spent a pleasant evening at Ford’s Theatre where First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was enjoying a performance before events unexpectedly disrupted the show.”

It is absurd and offensive to describe political violence and terrorist acts this way.

Yet somehow when it fits a certain narrative, the mainstream media suddenly finds endless empathy for perpetrators who sympathize with ISIS, want Israel wiped off the map, and acts on the mantra "death to America."

It’s ridiculous, outrageous, and despicable. You can't despise the mainstream media any more than we already do.

When an alleged terror attack is introduced not with the violence, the ideology, or the potential victims, but with flowery and scenic descriptions of teenagers enjoying a nice day in the city, it reveals something deeper about modern media instincts.

The impulse isn’t to report events. It’s to soften the acts of suspected terrorists who want to kill Americans, contextualize them, and reshape the emotional framing before we are even given the facts of what happened.

Americans are constantly told trust in the mainstream media is collapsing.

Absurd stories like this make it painfully obvious why.
