William Floyd High School senior Dominick Lauro has earned a congressional nomination from U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer to attend the United States Air Force Academy, bringing him one step closer to his goal of serving as an officer in the Air Force.

The nomination is considered a significant honor. Each year, only the top 25 applicants for each of the five service academy vacancies are selected to interview for one of Schumer’s nominations.

Lauro has built a strong record of leadership, academic achievement and community service during his time at William Floyd High School. A highly decorated member of the school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), he has served in several leadership roles, including commanding officer, senior enlisted leader and operations officer. He has also served as captain of the program’s Drill Team, Color Guard, Academic Team and Inspection Team.

In the classroom, Lauro has maintained a weighted grade point average of 96.08, ranking 46th among more than 700 students in the Class of 2026.

“Dominick is a driven, disciplined and resilient young man,” said Steven May, his guidance counselor at William Floyd High School. “He is dedicated to serving in the Air Force, pushing himself to never settle while carving his own path toward success.”

Outside of school, Lauro has been active in the Civil Air Patrol, the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. He currently serves as a cadet squadron commander and cadet deputy commander. During his time in the program, he earned the Cadet of the Year Award in 2023 and the Amelia Earhart Award in 2024.

Lauro has also contributed to his community through volunteer work with local veterans organizations, tutoring and mentoring students, and helping at soup kitchens.

An Eagle Scout, he organized the creation of a veterans memorial wall at St. Jude’s Church as part of his Eagle Scout project.
