Shirley Man Killed in Sunrise Highway Crash

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred in Brookhaven.

Police said Justin Digiovanna, 23, of Shirley, was driving a 2021 Mazda CX-5 eastbound on Sunrise Highway near Horseblock Road when the vehicle left the roadway.

The SUV then crashed into a wooded area on the southbound side of the highway.

Emergency responders, including South Country Ambulance, arrived at the scene and transported Digiovanna to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk. He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

Authorities have not said what caused the vehicle to leave the road, and no other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash. The Mazda was impounded for a safety check as part of the ongoing investigation.

Detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including roadway conditions and any other contributing factors. Additional information was not immediately available.

Sunrise Highway is a major east-west roadway on Long Island, and the area near Horseblock Road remained active with emergency personnel for a time following the crash.
