America’s Boating Club Great South Bay will host a two-hour “Anchoring With Assurance” seminar this spring at the West Islip Public Library, offering boaters practical instruction ahead of the 2026 season.

The seminar will be held Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and again Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the library, 3 Higbie Lane, West Islip. Participants may choose either session.

The in-person program is open to the public and will focus on anchoring techniques for a range of real-world situations. Topics include how to properly secure a vessel using line and chain with one or more anchors, how to anchor safely in varying conditions, and how to respond in emergencies such as power loss, equipment failure, or hazardous weather. The seminar will conclude with guidance on safe mooring and rafting.

“This seminar is designed to help boaters feel confident and prepared before they head out on the water,” said Mark R. Businski, public relations officer for the club. “Whether you’re new to boating or have years of experience, understanding proper anchoring techniques is essential for safety.”

Registration is required in advance at https://BOATgsb.org. The cost is $20 for non-members and $10 for members of America’s Boating Club. Space is limited.

The seminar is being offered as the region prepares for SAIL250, the July 3–8, 2026 celebration in New York Harbor marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event is expected to feature the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world.

America’s Boating Club of Great South Bay is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recreational boating safety and education.
