South Country Library will celebrate International Pokémon Day on Saturday, Feb. 28, with free activities for all ages, including card games, crafts, and a scavenger hunt. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 22 Station Road.
Pokémon, set in a fantasy world of trainers and pocket monsters, was developed in Japan 30 years ago and has a multigenerational following.
“I expect it to be a good turnout,” said Emma Bull, adult programming coordinator. “We chose Pokémon because it’s something that is big for everybody now.”
The event brings together children’s, teen, and adult librarians to engage attendees with activities ranging from Pokémon card games to a building-wide scavenger hunt with prizes, similar to Pokémon GO.
“We’ll have the cotton candy machine, and we’ll also be playing the Pokémon card game as well. One of our children’s librarians is very good with that so she’s going to be running a clinic of how to play the game,” Bull said.
Throughout the day, there will be Pokémon episodes and character painting.
“We’re going to have crafts that are for all ages,” Bull said. Teens and adults can create vinyl tote bags with iron-on Pokémon-inspired templates, and tweens and teens can register that day to make Pokémon terrariums. Same-day registration is required for video game slots.
Other highlights include Pokémon Battle Academy card game from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Pokémon caricatures from 12 to 2 p.m., a button-making station with teen volunteers, and face-painting from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
“It will be a fun event,” said Bull. “It’s something fun and light-hearted, which will be nice for the whole family to do together.”
