New York State Senator Dean Murray joined residents in Holbrook to celebrate a milestone few reach: the 100th birthday of World War II veteran Robert Scollon.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, Murray’s office honored Scollon for a century of life marked by service, dedication and community pride.

A longtime Holbrook resident, Scollon is remembered not only for his military service during World War II, but also for the life he built after returning home.

According to Murray’s office, Scollon worked hard until retirement, remained deeply devoted to his family and continued serving others well into his later years. He faithfully served as an usher at his church until the age of 96.

“He is beloved throughout the community, an outstanding citizen, and it was such a privilege to honor his remarkable life and legacy on this milestone birthday,” the senator’s office said.

Scollon’s 100 years span dramatic changes in American life. When he was born in 1926, Calvin Coolidge was president, silent films were still popular, and everyday goods cost only a few cents.

Government records from the era show that food prices were a fraction of what they are today, with staples like potatoes selling for just a few cents per pound.

Over the decades, Scollon witnessed the Great Depression, World War II, the civil rights movement, the rise of space exploration and the modern digital age — all while remaining a steady presence in his hometown.

The Senator’s visit highlighted the importance of recognizing veterans whose lives reflect both sacrifice and lasting community impact.

Friends, family and neighbors joined in celebrating Scollon’s century of memories, honoring a man whose story represents a living connection to history and an enduring example of service.
