The Convergence lecture series at Stony Brook University will continue with a presentation titled “Get in the Game! Data Analytics Via Sports.” The event will feature Tim Chartier, a professor of mathematics and computer science at Davidson College, who is recognized for his work in sports analytics.
Chartier has worked with major professional sports leagues and has guided students who have gone on to careers with organizations such as the NBA, MLB, NFL, NASCAR, and ESPN. He has received awards for his research and teaching and has been featured in publications like Bloomberg and USA Today.
During the lecture, Chartier will discuss how data analysis is used in sports to optimize team rosters, predict outcomes, and develop strategies. The session will include practical examples from professional athletics as well as advice for those interested in pursuing education or careers in this field. A question-and-answer segment will follow the presentation.
The event is scheduled for noon on Saturday, November 22, at the Student Activities Center Auditorium. Admission is free but seating is limited; attendees are encouraged to reserve seats online.
The Convergence lecture series is organized by Stony Brook University’s Institute for Creative Problem Solving in partnership with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The series aims to engage participants with various aspects of mathematical thinking through talks that explore real-world applications and abstract concepts.
