Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig have announced the completion of two major paving projects in Mastic and Shirley. The work involved resurfacing a total of 23 roadways.

Before the paving, crews carried out drainage maintenance and replaced damaged concrete aprons. The first project covered 10 roadways between Somerset Avenue and Meadowmere Avenue, including Pawnee Avenue, Meadowmere Avenue, Strafford Street, Terapin Street, Tonopan Street, Bullard Street, Van Buren Street, Monroe Street, Madison Street, and Hawthorne Street. The cost for this project was about $1.2 million.

The second project included the resurfacing of Essex Circle, Ostend Circle, Hounslow Road, Broadway, Concord Road, Floyd Road, Tudor Road, Stuart Road, Linden Avenue, Fleet Road, Lawrence Road, The Green, and Beacon Street. This project also cost approximately $1.2 million.

“Last year, we were able to pave roadways north of Floyd Road and this year we returned to focus south of Floyd,” said Losquadro. “These were all heavily-traveled roadways that see a great deal of daily traffic from motorists going to and from John S. Hobart Elementary School, William Floyd Elementary School and Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School. Over the last two paving seasons, we’ve successfully resurfaced dozens of roadways in this area making them safer and smoother for residents, commuters and pedestrians.”

Councilwoman Dunne Kesnig said, “Our roads are the backbone of daily life and maintaining them is essential to keeping our communities connected and thriving.”

Is There a New Ace in Town?

The New York Mets have a new ace, and fantasy owners have been accustomed to viewing Freddy Peralta as a near-ace for some time. The move to a more pitcher-friendly park should help, but do not overreach, because the reality is that the lineup around him is roughly the same and the bullpen is likely worse at protecting his leads. Peralta has been a standout for years, and slotting him in as a high-value fantasy arm is easy. The question is just how high he should go.
