Long Island Cares will host its fourth annual 5K & Paws Walk on Sunday, Sept. 21, at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon. The pet-friendly event begins at 9 a.m., with sign-in starting at 8 a.m. It will take place rain or shine.

“Unlike traditional races, this event welcomes dogs to walk or run alongside their humans,” said Theresa Redlein, event coordinator with Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. “It’s a celebration of the bond between people and pets. The event supports Baxter's Pet Pantry. Proceeds help feed pets in need across Long Island. So, dog lovers know their participation directly helps other animals.”

Participants can choose to walk, run or complete the course with their pets. A light breakfast will be provided, and attendees can enter a raffle for a gift basket of their choice by donating a nonperishable food item for humans or pets.

Several adoption-focused organizations will be on-site, offering opportunities for attendees to connect with animals in need of homes, Redlein said.

“The 5K & Paws Walk began four years ago as a simple dog walk, but last year we expanded it to include a 5K run/walk, opening the event to all Long Islanders who want to support a great cause while enjoying a fun, active day with or without their furry friends,” she said.

Last year’s event drew more than 265 runners and walkers and more than 125 dogs. This year, participation is expected to grow, based on early registration numbers.

Redlein said food insecurity continues to affect both families and their pets. Long Island Cares currently serves more than 313,800 residents, including 71,500 children.

“We know that families facing food insecurity often struggle to provide for their beloved pets. That’s why we established Baxter’s Pet Pantry to ensure that all members of the family have enough to eat by making food and supplies available for your pets,” she said.

Founded in 1980 by the late Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares is marking its 45th year of service. The organization works to improve food security, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency, and educate the public about hunger on Long Island.

“Long Island Cares Inc. brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry and food insecure on Long Island and, to the best of our ability, provides for the humanitarian needs of our community,” Redlein said.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
