Stony Brook University launches $50K innovation challenge for faculty and graduate students

Stony Brook University has announced the launch of its first Brook & Beyond Challenge, a competition offering faculty and graduate students an opportunity to secure up to $50,000 in milestone-based funding for innovative projects. Applications are currently open and will be accepted until September 5. The university will hold a virtual information session on August 25 from noon to 1 p.m.

Finalists for the challenge will be revealed on September 12. They will participate in weekly boot camp-style sessions—both virtual and live—to prepare for an in-person showcase scheduled for December 5. During this event, finalists will present their ideas before a panel that includes judges, investors, and industry professionals. Winners named at the showcase will receive a year of funding, mentorship, and commercialization support.

“The Brook & Beyond Challenge positions Stony Brook as a true innovation leader on Long Island and beyond. We’re creating an ecosystem where academic excellence and entrepreneurial impact converge,” said Hannah Estes, director of innovation and entrepreneurship at the Office of Research and Innovation. “I’m proud we can support our faculty with comprehensive mentorship and funding. These are some of the smartest, most innovative minds in their fields.”

The competition is structured into two tracks based on project development stage. Both tracks provide teams with guidance from commercialization experts, training to improve pitches and business models, as well as connections to potential investors and licensing partners. Ventures focused on sustainability or social impact are particularly encouraged to apply.

“The Brook & Beyond Challenge represents our unwavering belief that today’s research breakthroughs are tomorrow’s solutions to humanity’s greatest challenges. We’re not just funding projects, we’re catalyzing the future,” added Estes.

Teams must include at least one member affiliated with Stony Brook University to be eligible for participation. More details about the challenge—including how to register for the Q&A session or submit an application—are available on its website.
