Farmingville, NY – In a joint effort to address the dynamics of relationships in today's digital world, Long Island Against Domestic Violence (LIADV) and the Suffolk County Police Department are working together to empower both adults and teens. Their initiative focuses on recognizing red flags in unhealthy relationships and promoting healthy communication and mutual respect.

On February 6, the Town of Brookhaven will host "The Red Flags of Dating," featuring two workshops—one for youth and another for parents and adults. The event is scheduled from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville, NY.

The workshops aim to educate teens about the warning signs of unhealthy and abusive relationships while providing them with resources for support. Participants will also learn about services available through LIADV and the Suffolk County Police Department. "With their guidance, we hope to foster a new generation that understands the importance of respect, trust, and communication in all relationships," said a spokesperson for the initiative.

Key topics include differentiating between healthy and unhealthy relationships by identifying signs of emotional, physical, and verbal abuse. LIADV offers resources such as counseling, shelter, and legal assistance for those in abusive situations. The Suffolk County Police Department provides immediate help for individuals who may be in danger or need further guidance.

The workshops also provide parents with tips on discussing unhealthy relationships with their teens. This includes fostering open dialogue, recognizing warning signs, and encouraging teens to seek help when necessary.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative amid rising incidents of dating violence and abuse, organizers stress that it is crucial for families to recognize early signs and act swiftly. "Through this collaborative effort," they aim "to help teens make informed decisions about their relationships."

To register for the event, interested participants can RSVP to Sharon Boyd at [email protected].
