Smithtown volunteer firefighters responded to a structure fire at 31 Sandalwood Drive early on September 27, 2024. The call came in at 5:05 a.m., and First Assistant Chief Timothy Duckham was the first to arrive, confirming an active fire. Chief Patrick Diecidue then called for a second alarm, bringing in support from neighboring departments.
Upon arrival, crews discovered the fire had spread from an attached garage into the first and second floors of the building. Engine 4-2-4 arrived first and deployed a 1-3/4” handline to tackle the blaze at the front of the house. Meanwhile, Engine 4-2-5 stretched another line to protect nearby structures. Both engine chauffeurs secured water sources to ensure sufficient supply.
Once exterior flames were subdued, teams led by Third Assistant Chief Andrew Kelly launched an interior attack targeting flames that had reached the second floor and attic. Ladder 4-2-7 conducted searches to confirm all residents were safely evacuated, while Nesconset Ladder 4-4-7 accessed hidden fires within the structure. Hauppauge Engine 3-8-14 deployed a third line for additional protection upon arrival.
Emergency medical services were on standby with ambulances numbered 4-2-61, 4-2-62, and 4-2-65 alongside First Responder unit 4-2-81 in case of injuries. Mutual aid came from Nesconset Fire Department, Hauppauge Fire Department, St James Fire Department, and Commack Fire Department. Nissequogue FD, Kings Park FD & Commack Ambulance remained on standby for other potential emergencies.
No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters during operations that lasted until approximately 7:48 a.m., under Chief Diecidue's command. The cause of the fire is being investigated by Smithtown Fire Marshal’s office along with Suffolk County Police.
