A year after the William Floyd Football team was bounced from the County Playoffs by Ward Melville and just a few weeks after losing their only game to Sachem North during the regular season, the Colonials came out and made sure that they would fulfill their destiny last Friday night as they stomped out the Flaming Arrows in a revenge game and claimed victory.

The Colonials – who are now 10-1 overall on the year – made sure they made it back to the Long Island Championship as they would roll past the Flaming Arrows as they would put up 26 points to their opponents 9 to keep their season alive for one more week.

“I’m just so happy for all my players, the whole community, for the school,” legendary head coach Paul Longo said to reporters after the game. “After all these years, it (winning) doesn’t get old.”

The first half was pretty quiet overall aside from an AJ Cannet deep ball that was caught by Geo Alvarez who scampered past the Sachem North defense for an 89-yard touchdown with 2:57 left in the first quarter, giving Floyd an early 7-0 lead.

After a couple of disappointing drives that ended in turnovers deep in Floyd Territory in the first half, Sachem North had a methodical drive to start the second half, but the Floyd defense held true and they forced the Flaming Arrows to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Zach DeMilt with 5:17 left in the third quarter.

Jayden Montalvo – who had missed the previous six games due to a knee injury- made sure his presence was felt in this one in the second half as he returned the ensuing kickoff following the Sachem field goal for 45 yards, putting the ball at the opposing team’s 36-yard line.

Montalvo would later reap the benefits of his big return as he punched the ball across the goal line on a 2-yard run with 3:17 left in the quarter to give Floyd a 13-3 lead.

After a Sachem North touchdown cut the lead to 13-9, Montalvo continued his magnificent play in this one as he scored on another 2 yard touchdown run to push the Colonials lead up to 20-9.

“It was amazing because I worked so hard and then just seeing it finally pay off,” Montalvo said to Newsday following his team's victory. “I couldn’t have done it without my offensive line, honestly.”

With 2:31 left in the game and Floyd with possession of the ball, junior varsity call-up Ja’Quan Thomas flashed some of the talent he possesses as he would ice the game with a 64-yard touchdown to make it a 26-9 game.

Statistically in this one, the Colonials were led by Montalvo’s 15 carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback AJ Cannet connected with Geo Alvarez twice for 155 yards and a touchdown in this one.

Floyd has been dominant this year as they have held an opponent to single digits for the sixth time in 11 games and they will now look to keep their stretch of dominance going as they take on undefeated Massapequa in the Long Island Championship at Hofstra University this upcoming weekend.
