With 2023 ending last week, some of the best runners in Suffolk County made one last attempt to end their year with a shiny new personal best. The runners had an opportunity to end on a good note while competing at the North Shore Classic at the Fort Washington Armory in New York City.

On the boys side, Smithtown West Senior – and one of the best Long Island has to offer – Doug Antaky got off to a hot start in his final indoor season. Antaky ventured out to the Armory in New York City to participate in the North Shore Holiday Classic. There he would compete in the boys 1600 meter run where he placed second with a blistering time of 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

Shoreham-Wading River Junior Michael Huber was also one of the many Long Islanders who would make a statement early in the track season. Huber would run the 600 meter dash at the North Shore Holiday Classic in the very fast time of 1 minute and 22 seconds to claim the top time in Suffolk County at the time of this article's release.

Ward Melville Junior Jon Seyfert also made his presence felt during his race at the Armory over the weekend. Seyfert ran a new county best – and personal best – in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 34 seconds.

Seyfert’s teammate Brian Leibowitz also got a kickstart to his season as the All-County Cross Country runner looks to keep his momentum rolling. Leibovitz ran the 3200 meter run at the Armory over the weekend where he placed third in his race, thus placing the new fastest time in the county, crossing the line in 9 minutes and 35 seconds.

Ward Melville continued their success at the meet as their 4x800 meter team crossed the finish line in second place, posting a time of 8 minutes and 16 seconds and puting them at the top of the county results.

In the sprinting events during the meet, Eastport-South Manor’s Lucas Flore would take home the gold in the 55 meter dash as he would show off his incredible top speed by posting a new county best time of 6.50 seconds.

On the girls side, it was all Zariel Macchia over the Holiday break as the All-Everything distance runner from William Floyd High School doubled up with meets during the week. She ran the 1000 meter run at the North Shore Invite and the 1500 meter run later in the week at the Armory High School Classic.

Her 1000 meter time was good enough to place first at the North Shore meet. She ran not just the new county best, but the New York State leading time of 2 minutes and 49 seconds in the event.

Macchia’s 1500m race later in the week saw her place only second but still running faster than anyone in Suffolk County as she ran the near mile-long race in 4 minutes and 35 seconds.

Sachem East dominance on the race walking world also was renewed this past week as Ally Callinan walked 1500 meters in 7 minutes and 8 seconds, claiming victory and the best time in the county so far this season.
